Zagreb, as the capital and the largest city of Croatia, it is the cultural, economic and governmental center of the Republic of Croatia.
City of Zagreb is situated between the southern slopes of the Medvednica Mountain and northern and southern bank of the Sava River; it is approximately 122 meters above sea level.
The population of Zagreb is approximately 1,106,000 inhabitants and it is the only Croatian city with population exceeds one million people.
The origin of the name Zagreb is unknown; there are few legend stories and theory but the first recorded appearance of the name Zagreb is from 1094, at that time the city exists as two different centers: smaller area, Kaptol, it was canonical settlement where the city Cathedral is, and larger area Gradec fortified settlement on the neighboring hill inhabited by mainly farmers and merchants. In 1242 Zagreb actually Gradec becomes a free royal town. Political and other conflict between the free town of Gradec and Zagreb diocese Kaptol came to end when Kaptol and Gradec were united in 1851 by ban Josip Jelacic, by whom today the name of the main city square is.
Zagreb is significant tourist center, mainly as important point for people travelling from Western and Central Europe to the Adriatic coast, but it is also interesting travel destination itself.
The historical part of Zagreb is situated north from Ban Jelacic main square, there you can find Kaptol and Upper Town with medieval buildings, churches, museums, palaces, government buildings and galleries. This historical area is popular by toursits and can be reached on foot from main square or by funicular from nearby Tomiceva Street.
