Vodnjan town in Istria, Croatia

Vodnjan Coat of ArmsVodnjan is a small town situated near Pula on the Istria peninsula; it has population of approximately 3,500 inhabitants. The town is at 135 meter s above sea level situated 12 km from the Pula and Adriatic Sea.

Vodnjan originated from Roman times and share his history with other Istria towns. The main economy of town includes viniculture, olive growing, tourism and farming.
The town of Vodnjan and surrounding area offers beautiful nature and an abundance of cultural and historical monuments together with good food and local wines. The town preserved its special characteristics of medieval urban-rural town with narrow streets, Gothic, Venetian, Renaissance and Baroque style architecture and many churches rich with history and art.

 What to see in Vodnjan

The town hall
Situated on the main square in the centre of the town is the town hall is built in the neo-Gothic style with the interesting wooden balcony. The square is also surrounded by important buildings and the palace.

Church of St. Blaise
Parish church situated on the one of the town square, three-nave basilica built on the site of the old church in 1808. It is the largest parish church in region and a church with the highest bell tower in Istria, 62 m. The bell tower was built in 1815 and fully completed in 1882.
The interior of the church has nine altars rich in decoration of marble and oil painting of saints; the great artistic value. The church has exceptionally valuable inventory partially presented in the church museum. Specificity of the church is that keeps the bodies of saints.

Church of Our Lady of Mount Caramel
It is situated in the old town, built in 1630.  The interior is equipped with altars from the period of construction.  Renaissance features can be found only on the front of the church. The bell tower is of small dimensions with a single bell.

Church of St. Jacob
It is considered as the oldest religious building in the city with no exact data about its origin and original format. It is situated in the oldest part of Vodnjan and church witnessed one of the most important events in town history, writing the town Statute in 1492.
