Vis town is probably the oldest urban settlement on the Croatian territory, (for that title also compete Stari Grad on the neighboring island of Hvar), which has existed for 2400 years.

Town of Vis is situated on the Vis Island and is part of Split-Dalmatia County. The town has population of approximately 2000 inhabitants. Vis town is located in a large protected bay on the north side of the island.
The high mountains separate the town from the fertile fields in the inland of the Vis Island, which constituted the basis for economic development of the town.
Until the mid-twentieth century, the main source of income of Vis town was their vineyards and wine production. Today the population works mainly in the tourism.

The first settlement on the site of Vis town, under the name of Issa, was founded by Greek colonists from Sicily in the fourth century BC. They, like all the later rulers of Vis, attracted an excellent strategic location of island from where they could control the maritime routes in the Adriatic Sea. Ancient Issa has been developed as an urban and economic center of the Adriatic Sea and was used as the basis for settling the Dalmatian mainland.
Functioning as a polis or city-state, Issa has managed to preserve its independence until the first century BC, when it became part of the Roman Empire. Then Vis loses meaning and only occasionally appears in medieval sources, sharing the fate of the rest of Dalmatia.

Vis has been developed into a typical Mediterranean town with many summer houses, fortresses, squares; and the steep hills that surround Vis are determined town to spread along the edge of blue Adriatic Sea.

The town of Vis is the only place on the island which has a daily ferry connection to Split.
Vis town is a good choice for those who come without a car because all the necessary facilities are at hand. The pebble beach is about a hundred meters from the center of the town, and near the harbor, there are several easily accessible beaches.
