Visiting Sibenik

Sibenik is well integrated into the Croatian freeway and railway network. The closest airports are at Zadar and Split.
Ferries from Jadrolinja run down the coast between Dubrovnik and Rijeka, stopping at Sibenik.

Sibenik Coat of ArmsSibenik is town situated in the middle of the Croatian Adriatic Coast in central Dalmatia; it has population of approximately 37,000 inhabitants. The town lies in the picturesque and indented bay where the Krka River flows into the Adriatic Sea.

The town is the seat of Sibenik - Knin County and important transit center and remarkable tourist destination. In surroundings there is two national parks Kornati Islands and Krka River; a very good reasons to add Sibenik and its surroundings as an interesting tourist offer.

Among all towns at the Adriatic coast, Sibenik is unique by its location in a picturesque and large bay, at the mouth of the Krka River. The town was mentioned for the first time under its present name in 1066 in a document of the Croatian King, Petar Kresimir IV. Sibenik is also called Kresimir's city.
Sibenik obtained its status of a town and its own diocese in 1298.

Sibenik offers the unique harmony from his urban part and its natural surroundings. The town harbor is connected with the open sea by the St. Anthony Strait.

What to see in Sibenik

The Cathedral in Sibenik
The Cathedral of St James is the greatest and most valuable object in Sibenik architectural heritage. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Old city centre
The old city centre includes some of main historic buildings:
- City Hall, situated in the central city square, a very harmonious Renaissance style building built from 1533-1536.
- Dukes Palace situated on the shore of the city core, it was very big structure and today two wings have remained, the town museum is located in one of the wings and holds the archeological, and the historical heritage of the Sibenik region.
- The Bishops Palace, a Gothic-Renaissance structure from the 15th century. Near the palace is the old preserved Seagate, which is an entrance to the city from the sea side.
- Square of the Four Wells, built in 1451, the old Sibenik water supply “The Four Wells” which has been supplying citizens with water for four and a half centuries. 

The fortress of St. Michael
The fortress was built between the 15th and 17th century, from white stone. It was built by Croats on the ruins of old Illyrian station.

The Fortress of St. Nicholas
The fortress is situated at the entrance to the St. Anthony Channel built in the 16th century. It was made in triangle shape for protection from Turkish attacks from sea.

The Fortress of St. John
The fortress is situated on a hill north from historic centre built in 1646 for protection from Turks.

The Subicevac Fortress 
The fortress is situated southeast of the fortress of St. John built same year and with same purpose, to prevent Turkish attacks on town.

Church of St. John
It is the Gothic-Renaissance building built in 15 century; sculptures represent a masterpiece of medieval works of Dalmatian architecture.

Church of the Holy Spirit
The church can be found in the center of the Sibenik. The church was built in the 17th century and is adorned with a beautiful stone facade with a stunning Baroque style.

Monastery and Church of St. Francis
St. Francis Church was built in the 14th century at the furthest part of the historic city. It is made in Gothic style without architectural decorative elements. In the 15th century at the northern side Chapel was added were now is an organ built in 1762 by Petar Nakic, a noted maker of these instruments. Monastery keeps works of art collected for many centuries, and today, it represents a place where a great deal of monumental city heritage is kept.
