Ploce is town situated on the Adriatic coast just north of the Neretva River delta in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County; it has population of approximately 6,500 inhabitants.
Town of Ploce is notable seaport. The most important feature of town is his natural position through the valley of the Neretva River, which connects the central areas of neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Adriatic Sea. Town is situated in approximately half of distance between Split and Dubrovnik on the part of the road traffic along the Adriatic coast.
It is also worth to mention that near the town are Bacina Lakes, located along the branches of the mountain of Biokovo.

Port of Ploce was first mentioned in written historical sources from 1387 in a document that is kept in the Historical Archives in Dubrovnik.
Construction of the port of Ploce was in plans of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the second half of the 19th, they start building the dike around the mouth of the Neretva to the Ploce Bay, where the remains can be seen to the present day. But the first serious consideration of building the port of Ploce is from 1922, when the first monitoring and measurement were made.
Finally in 1939 begin the actual work to build the seaport of Ploce. However it was all destroyed in World War II but rebuilt after the war, and the settlement grew to 480 inhabitants by 1948. After the Adriatic road and Neretva railway lines were built and with the traffic potential the town began to extensively spread.
In December 1992 Ploce have been granted the status of the city with City Hall, City Council and the Mayor.
Today Ploce is small modern seaport town at the mouth of Neretva River. The main town economy income is from the cargo seaport transport, with the second volume of transshipment in Croatia, and the port is connected to a large number of related activities.
The city tourism, unlike other coastal cities in Croatia, has no particular significance. Conditions for tourism development exist because of its proximity to the mouth of the Neretva and Bacina Lakes., but the town future development is based on transportation position which will significantly contribute to recent construction of the Adriatic-Ionian and the Pan-European Corridor, whose hub is located in the vicinity of the city.
