Opuzen is town situated 12 kilometers upstream from the mouth of the Neretva River in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County; it has population of approximately 3,500 inhabitants.
River Neretva delta is paradise for fishermen and area is well known by breeding tangerines, watermelon, tomatoes, grapes and many other agricultural products. The Neretva delta is very rich in eels, which, along with frogs makes integral part of local gastronomic specialties.
History of Opuzen goes back to the period of the Dubrovnik Republic, where the town is mentioned as island and place of trading salt. Opuzen got its name by the fortress Fort Opus built by the Venetians in 1684.
Venetian Republic did not care about development of region and education was on low level as the priesthood was not allowed teaching. By fall of the Venetian Republic and the arrival of Austria began prosperity of the region. Community school in Opuzen opened on 28 May 1798 and was the only school in the Neretva area during that period.

Important cultural events related to Opuzen and its surroundings, are "Opuzensko Lito" (Opuzen Summer) and the pop-music festival "Melodies of the South."
One of the most attractive sports events is "Marathon Ladja". It is the sports rowing spectacle with 22, 5 kilometers Neretva River marathon and with approx 35 ships each year.
