Visiting Risnjak

National Park Risnjak

National Park Risnjak is located in Gorski kotar area the most mountainous and heavily forested region of the country.
The park is situated in Primorje - Gorski Kotar County, and is divided between the town of Cabar, and the town of Delnice and not far from Rijeka about 15 km inland from the Adriatic Sea.

The park covers an area of 64 square kilometers including the central part of Risnjak and Snježnik massif and the source area of the river Kupa. The name of the massif comes after its most popular inhabitant, the ris, the lynx.

The park is located where the Alps meet the Dinaric Mountains; it combines almost all the forest types of these areas, as well as containing numerous plant and animal species.
The area is home to different animals such as the brown bear, deer, roe deer, chamois, wild boar, wolf, pine marten, stone marten, badger, weasel, squirrel and lynx. There are also numerous bird species living there, sparrow hawk, grouse, and owl, amongst others.

Park is equally attractive in all seasons: with snow in winter; when the meadows are transformed into carpets of flowers during the spring; during the summer to escape from the heat in the nearby littoral area; and during the autumn, when the trees are bathed in a myriad of colors. It is also famous for its fantastic views of the islands of the Kvarner Bay.

Risnjak is National Park since September 15th, 1953. The administration and visitor center of the park are located in Crni Lug.

Place of interest in National Park Risnjak:

- Veliki Risnjak, it is the highest peak in the park, 1528 m. On its southern slope is located the mountain lodge called Schlosser house. The highest point can be reached only on foot, from Crni Lug (3 hours) or from an road beginning in Gornje Jelenje (1 hour).

- Snježnik as the second highest peak in the park, 1506 m. On its peak is located a mountain lodge called Albaharijev dom. It is about 1, 5 hours walk from the ski resort of Platak; the most common place for tour skiing in Croatia.

- Guslica as a peak about 1 hour walks from Snježnik, with an altitude of 1490 m. There is the site of an abandoned army complex and it looks as a kind of a ghost town.

- Educational path Leska, created by the park administration, in a circular walks long 4, 5 km. The path beginning and ending at the visitor center in Crni Lug and passes through areas of different vegetations

- River Kupa source, as the park lowest point, 313 m, in an oval pond some 50 m wide.
The source can be reached by 30 minutes walk from the Razloge village.
