The Plitvice Lakes are by far most precious jewel and best known National park in Croatia.
The main attraction of this park, unique in the world, comprises 16 small lakes mutually joined by waterfalls created by a special type of limestone. This national park encompasses the source of the River Korana, located in an area surrounded by dense forests of beech, fir and spruce. There are also several caves in the park, as well as springs, flowering meadows, and among a number of preserved animal species which stands out is the brown bear.

The popularity of this park is also boosted by the special means of transport used to ferry visitors around: the panoramic trains and the noiseless electro powered boats. It is impossible to say whether the park is more beautiful in the spring, when the flowers in its meadows are in full bloom and when the threes have turned green again, or when riot of autumn colors is reflected n the water of the lakes, or indeed during the winter calm, when ice petrifies the waterfalls and trees are covered with snow.
By a network of pathways visitors can get around and access numerous waterfalls and a rocky lake shores. The intense green color of the lakes is also a magnet for curious tourists.
The Plitvice Lakes are divided into the larger Upper Lakes, set amid wooded and gentler slopes, and the Lower Lakes situated in a rugged and rocky canyon. The highest of the lakes is situated at an altitude of 637 meters, and the base of Sastavci, the lowest waterfall, beneath witch the River Korana begins its course, at an altitude of 503 meters.
This 134 meter long span is further divided into a myriad of greater and lesser waterfalls which endlessly change their appearance and height.
Specially built footpaths’ erected on wooden supports allow visitors to approach the waterfalls, while at the same time preserving the creator of the lakes, travertine, which is easily damaged by people walking over it.

In addition to enabling people to enjoy the pure beauty of nature, one role of each national park is to teach us fundamental natural values. At Plitvice Lakes this is undertaken by numerous instruction boards and by printed material which can be acquired in the park facilities, all of which have been built from natural materials typical of this area.
