Labin Coat of ArmsLabin is town in Istria situated on high hill only three kilometers from the Adriatic Sea; it has population of approximately 8,000 inhabitants. 

Labin is situated 5 km from the tourist resort of Rabac located on the eastern coast of Istria. On the hill is located the Old City, and the second part of the town is known by the name Podlabin or Under-Labin.

Labin is created on the site of a Roman settlement Albona. From 1295 was under the rule of Pazin counts, and later under the rule of Venice, and then annexed to Austria.
After the First World War, Istria was occupied by Italy. In 1921 Labin miner’s revolt against fascistic regime, and founded Labin Republic with the government of workers, but after forty days was stifled by military intervention.
After Second World War, these regions were annexed to Croatia.

More than 400 years in Labin area was the intensive coal mining activity, mines have long been the Labin backbone of the economy. Mines in Labin stopped operating in 1988.

Today Labin is cultural and administrative center, and it has rich cultural and architectural heritage. The Old town is enlivened by number of art ateliers. Labin is also popular by tourist coming to Rabac which is just a few kilometers away and well know tourist destination.

What to see in Labin

Old Town
It is typical Istria town situated on hill, streets are covered with stones and very steep, you can see interesting old buildings, and on the top is magnificent view on Rabac resort and Adriatic Sea.

Church of Blessed Virgin Mary
It is three-nave church built in 1336; it is decorated with six marble altars.

Town loggia
Built in 1550 and it was centre of life in the past. 

Porta Sanfior
Main town doors dating from 1589 with Labin coat of arms.

Baroque palace
Today is town museum.

Sculpture Park Dubrova
It is park with interesting sculptures and other art situated just outside of town.

Walking pad from Labin to Rabac
You can stroll down and have an amazing walk trough nature but is recommended to be in good shape to do that, it is approx 45 minutes walk.
