The Porec a town, where Christianity was established as early as the 4th century has one of the best examples of early Byzantine art in the region. Episcopal Complex has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Episcopal Complex in the Historic Centre of Porec, include The Euphrasian Basilica, a sacristy, a baptistery and the bell tower of the nearby archbishop's palace.

The present basilica was built in the 6th century and it was built on the site of the older basilica from the 4th century that had become dilapidated.
For the construction of new basilica, parts of the former church were used and the marble blocks were imported from Greece coast of the Sea of Marmara. The floor mosaics were made by local experts and the wall mosaics were made by Byzantine masters. The construction took about ten years. The mosaics are considered amongst the finest examples of Byzantine art in the world.
The church also houses precious holy objects and other artworks from the early Christian, Byzantine and middle Ages periods.
