Buje is town in Istria situated inland 10 km from the Adriatic Sea. It is a picturesque town situated on the top of the hill and it has population of approximately 5,500 inhabitants.
Buje has a rich history; the town was built on the site of prehistoric ruins due to its strategic position. After the fall of Roman Empire it was under the rule of the barbarians, and later under Venetian republic. After the fall of the Venetian republic Buje was briefly under the French government and in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
After the First World War, Buje and Istria was occupied, and annexed by Italy, and stayed under Italian administration to the end of second World War when was attach to Croatia. The town still has the high number of Italian population.
Today Buje offers a blend of gentle Mediterranean climate, good food and a peaceful environment, all of it not far away from the hustle and bustle of the touristic Istria coastal resorts.

What to see in Buje
Church of Saint Servelus
The parish church built on the foundations of the old three-nave Romanesque-Gothic church from the 13th century. Reconstruction of the church began in 1754 and completed in 1784. This church was built in the baroque-classicist style.
Church of the Mother of Mercy
Origin of Church marked the miraculous event that is determined the building outside the city walls.
Today is situated on Freedom Square, a traditional meeting place of local people.
The first chapel was built in the 1498 and later was on several occasions extended and reconstructed. In front of the church there is a picturesque "frescal" from 1590 with fences and benches and a bell tower 22 m high with a clock and characteristic passage.
It is church with harmonious and simple architecture but inside is art works of priceless value.
Ethnographic Museum
Museums is situated over the street passage, or so called "second" town gate that were part of the last wall from the 17th Century. Museum collects handicrafts and popular culture material from the area. In museum is also reconstruction of the old Istria house with the premises.
Near town of Buje the most important tourist center is Kanegra, located in the large pine forest next to the Adriatic Sea.
